On a recent trip to the Solomon Islands I had the opportunity to meet the members of the provincial government of Makira-Ulawi Province Solomon Islands.
As chairman of DAISI I was pleased to accept an invitation to provide surgical team visits to the Kirakira hospital in 2025.

The DAISI team is preparing to perform a laparoscopic cholecystectomy with Dr Scott Siotta during their visit to NRH

Due to the pandemic, laparoscopy has had limited use at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara. Professor Matt Rickard checks the laparoscopes and tower before a laparoscopic cholecystectomy

The first visit by DAISI to NRH Honiara and Gizo hospital in 2023 has just been completed. A big thankyou to surgeons Matt Rickard and Robert Winn and anaesthetist Simon Cook.

@stoma_care_services who donated stoma supplies. Sister Margaret Marau was very happy to accept the supplies.

Applied Medical kindly donated Alexis wound protectors which were a huge advantage to have when operating on complex cases.

Sir Thomas Chan and Honiara hotel. Sir Thomas or Tommy is a Solomon Island philanthropist who has spent his life helping people in need. He has kindly offered to host DAISI teams who visit Honiara at reduced rates.

Prof. Hewett along with Dr Scott and Dr Rooney concluded a successful meeting with Dr Greg Jagilly and Permanent Secretary Pauline McNeil discussing the role of DAISI visits within the recently published strategic plan.

Whilst in the Solomon Islands Prof. Hewett was able to participate in a teaching session with the Registrars working in NRH. These doctors are the future of surgery in the Solomon Islands. Thank so Dr Rooney and Dr Scott for their guidance during Prof. Hewett’s stay.

Prof Hewett has spent the last two days at NRH. During his time he has been able to help treat three patients with advanced rectal cancer with the help of Dr Lydia Ipula and Dr Scott Siota. A big thankyou to the operating theatre nursing staff for their assistance! 🇸🇧 🇦🇺

DAISI is a not for profit Australian organisation with a commitment to collaborate with our South Pacific Neighbours.

DAISI consists of specialist and non specialist doctors, medical students, nurses, allied health professionals and non medical volunteers who have spent time volunteering their services in the South Pacific with DAISI.
